The Carolina Bridge at Carolina Village in Couva has collapsed. The structure gave away on Wednesday following heavy overnight rains on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government posted a safety update advising motorists to use alternative routes.
Member of Parliament for Couva South, Rudranath Indarsingh visited the site on Wednesday morning.
He says the collapse of this bridge leaves residents of Springvale, Claxton Bay, Mt. Pleasant Road, Carolina Trace Nos 1&2, Forres Park, Milton, Lower Carolina and other surrounding communities heavily affected and even marooned.
MP Indarsingh is calling on the Government to urgently install a bailey bridge as a temporary measure and for the full restoration of the roadway which will aid with the flow of vehicular traffic.
