Government Ministers Meet With Supermarket Association To Combat Food Prices

Trade and Industry Minister, Senator Paula Gopee-Scoon, along with the Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, Senator Kazim Hosein, held follow-up discussions this afternoon with Mr. Rajiv Diptee, President of the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago (SATT) and executives of SATT.

The meeting considered issues relating to food prices and in particular ensuring greater food security, through accelerating the local production of food, enhancing the direct supply linkages between producers and businesses; transforming the local taste of the population by promoting local alternatives, protecting the nutritional health of the population; and combatting food fraud by ensuring labelling standards are enforced on all imported food items.

Minister Kazim Hosein also took the opportunity to promote the Trinidad and Tobago Agri-Investment Forum and Expo 2022 which is carded for August 19-21, 2022.

The SATT undertook to collaborate with the Consumer Affairs Division to enhance the monitoring and reporting of food prices. The MTI and SATT have also committed to continuing collaboration to ensure that quality basic food items remain affordable and available to the population.
