MOH To Monitor New Variant Of Concern

Testing for the new variant of concern will be made available in the near future.

On August 30th, the World Health Organization said it was monitoring the variant known as ‘Mu’ after it was detected in several countries.

Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s update on COVID-19, Principal Medical Officer Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards reminds that the Ministry of Health works together with the UWI Laboratory which conducts testing for the variants.

Dr. Abdool-Richards maintains though that all vaccines are effective against the variants of concern.

The MU variant or B-1-621, was first detected in Colombia in January and was classified by WHO as a variant of interest on Monday.
