Plans To Steer Youth Away From Crime Underway

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is of the belief that the recent increase in criminal activity may be supported by State resources.

This is according to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley who met with Acting Commissioner of Police, McDonald Jacob, and officials from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as well as other National Security experts over the weekend.

Speaking during Monday’s Media Conference, Dr. Rowley said the issuance of contracts has spurred an increase in criminal activity as gang members fight for turf and resources. He said the State will take the relevant action to ensure the situation is curtailed and eliminated by targeting the young people among the population. Dr. Rowley said various Ministries are already at work, adding that the plan of action will be delivered using a public health approach.

Dr. Rowley said the objective of the plan is to target the young population at various levels, and begin a line of education that should steer them away from a life of crime. A Committee will be established and spearheaded by the Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services and the Ministry of Health.
