Signing Ceremony for Utility Scale Solar PV Project 

On the 9th December, 2022, The Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GoRTT) and Consortium partners bp Alternative Energy Trinidad and Tobago (bpATT), Shell Renewables Caribbean (Shell), and Lightsource bp, signed agreements for the Utility Scale Solar PV Project at the bpTT Hospitality Suite, Queen’s Park Oval. 

The Solar PV Project is set to be the first utility scale renewable power generation facility within Trinidad and Tobago, set to deliver 112.2MW onto the grid. The arrival to this point is a testimony of the Government’s steadfast commitment to decarbonizing the power sector and represents an energy milestone as we create a new energy mix to meet Trinidad and Tobago’s future energy needs. These agreements will pave the way for the project to move into the construction phase in early 2023.  

In attendance were Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Stuart R. Young, Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales, Permanent Secretaries Penelope Bradshaw-Niles and Sandra Fraser of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, and Permanent Secretary Nicolette Duke of the Ministry of Public Utilities.  

Remarks were given by Mr. David Campbell, President of bp Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Eugene Okpere, Senior Vice President and Country Chair, Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited, Mr. Francis Mann, Development Manager UK & Trinidad and Tobago, Lightsource BP, Mr. Romney Thomas, Chairman, Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission.  

Special remarks were given by the Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales, based on the future of the electricity and waste sector in the context of a clean energy future. The feature address was given by Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Stuart R. Young, who indicated that today is a very historic day for Trinidad and Tobago with the signing of these agreements, as Trinidad and Tobago will now be one step closer to achieving our climate change mitigation goals. 

Minister Young applauded the unwavering efforts and support provided by all involved parties, namely the Government Stakeholders, the Project Steering Committee and its technical Secretariat, Ministries and State Agencies alike, as well as the Consortium team. He further indicated that today marks the beginning of the paradigm shift in energy and we will continue to look to future clean energy projects for the benefit of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
