T&TEC Reaches Historical Electricity Demand Level

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) recorded its highest- ever consumer electricity demand on Monday.

In a release on Wednesday, T&TEC said the record-breaking level of 1,410 Megawatts was reached whilst T&T is experiencing unusually high temperatures.

General Manager of T&TEC, Curvis Francois, acknowledged that the high
temperatures would have likely caused increased usage of air conditioning units, which typically account for the highest percentage of electricity consumption in households.

He said while T&TEC has more than enough installed capacity to meet the surge in demand for electricity, the increased demand does result in increased natural gas usage.

Therefore the Commission is advising people to practice conservation, once safe to do so, as this will help to reduce the impact on the availability of natural gas.

Some tips to manage electricity usage include raising the temperature on air conditioning units by a few degrees, reducing water heating, and unplugging appliances when not in use to prevent energy wastage.
